Pudong is an extension of Shanghai. Not too long ago this was Shanghai's poor quarter- home to notorious gangster Du Yuesheng (gangsters in china was something I was unaware of). In 1990 the the area acquired the status of Special Economic Zone and has become one of the largest building sites in the world. I believe Suzhou is trying to compete.
